Steve, from Northern Brakes & Transmission, was the rudest mechanic I've ever spoken on the phone with. When I to asked to process payment by credit card for my damages he became extremely impatient, charged me a 3% fee just for using a credit card, within 24 hours of the incident. After I commented about his credit card fee and prehistoric email account, he completely lost his temper, and hung up on me. Thankfully I was able to contact the owner And put the whole thing to rest. However, DON"T TRUST STEVE IF YOU'RE IN A BIND AND NEED TO USE YOUR CREDIT CARD. Also, He and his company still use AOL...... That makes for a trustworthy business.... or does it? Re: I never said or wrote the phrase “Rip Off Artists .” You can make up stories all you want. As for the video you mentioned- please share it. By all means. I wasn’t driving aggressively. I made a simple mistake, I apologized, I made an effort to pay for the estimate, made one snarky comment to Steve, and he went crazy on me. Is this how you treat your customers? You can attempt to educate me about businesses all you want, but I stand firm in my opinion that Northern Brakes & Transmission, and Sterling Fell are operated by unethical business practitioners. Good mechanics are hard to find but the mechanics here are great! The owner explains in great detail everything you need to know prior to your repair. Old school knowledge with up to date technical ability. They test your car after they work on it to make sure everything is working properly. State of the art diagnostics to make sure the work gets done correctly. They just gained a new customer and I will be recommending this location to all who need a great repair shop.
These guys were great , I brought my car in to have them install a back up camera , this guy Steve calls me and says , there is one already there , but the wires were pulled out . He could have easily replaced it and charged me for a new one , he called me and told me , so he just charged me for reconnecting the wires , he saved me hundreds of dollars , he could have easily changed it and charge me for a new one , but he didn't . I'll be back for any other maintenance my car will need ...
Unfortunately, we had a poor experience at this shop. Came to replace brake pads & rotors and get an oil change. Job seems to be done proper, not an expert myself. Customer service was standard. However, I was quoted an incorrect price (additional $150 labor was not mentioned at all, so I assumed it was built into the cost). Of course, Steve will say he did mention it if he responds to this review. His word against mine here. I would never have come to this overpriced shop had I been quoted correctly, and he probably knew that. Was treated very rudely as if I were a thief thereafter. If you do decide to come here, I highly suggest you ask for a written estimate prior to the work being done. That said, there are plenty other shops in the area who will do a similar job without being sleazy about it. *Edit: In response to the owner, I will happily change my review if you can please provide video footage of you handing me "clear and detailed estimates" that were neither printed nor broken down clearly for me. Or even just the audio is fine - where you mention said "labor costs". I was not even given a total by you! But please do not cut off the section where I, more than once, repeat my estimated total of the costs you gave me - $480-500 (which did not include $150 labor cost) - and to which you had confirmed. Feel free to text the information to my cell that you should have saved, or request my email via text, whichever you prefer!
Steve is such a kind human being. Even though I'm a female, not once did he try to lie to me about my car's condition to take advantage. His prices have been very reasonable considering the work my car has required. He has been super helpful and is always explaining everything to keep me in the loop, and always willing to take my car in even on busy days. I highly recommend this shop. Service with Steve and the other mechanics is great!
I have been bringing my car to Steve for over two years. I cannot begin to say how valuable of a professional he is. Steve is honest, hard working and treats his returning customers like family. He understands how nerve wracking it can be to get the bad news your car needs high ticket repairs. He does everything in his power to be as transparent as possible as to what needs to be done, what you can hold off on, for how long, and he does his best to provide the best possible service at the lowest price he can. Steve really cares about getting you and your car back on the road safely and happily.
Best mechanic in town. I had so many issues with my vehicles and steve took car of all them. I run a fleet of cars, vans, trucks and couldn't keep them on the road with my previous mechanic. But Northern helped us stay on course and the work is perfect and fast. Honest guy... I love this guy.
Quality, quick and affordable! I can't thank Steve and his team enough for taking such good care of our transmission issues. They are the epitome of a quality, reliable car maintenance shop. A few lines were rusted as we were traveling from out of town and he was able to fix them quickly, and at an affordable price. Really bad customer service. I was in a rush and just needed my car battery changed. Tried to explain my situation to the manager, who refused to listen to anything I had to say and kept insisting on other work. I was also told that the car alternator was bad. I asked the manager to just let me leave with the battery changed, who threatened to install the old battery back and accused me of trying to scam him by disputing the charge later on my debit card. He only agreed to install the battery if I paid in cash. Had to walk several blocks away just so I could pay in cash and leave. He also warned me that I wouldnt be able to get back to work (only a 30 min drive) since the alternator was bad according to him. Not only did I get back without an issue, I got my alternator checked the very same day and a week later as well by 3 other shops who all informed me that the alternator was fine and didnt require a replacement. The whole process was incredibly inconvenient and unprofessional, never going back to this place.

Been coming here a couple years now with a problem car, they are always willing to work with me and have often times squeezed me in to thier busy schedule. They have always been more than fair with pricing and with problem solving, with excellent communication. Absolutely recommended if youre looking for a reliable mechanic in the area.
Though it doesnt look like it, Steve handles all kinds of vehicles. Feel free to bring your personal vehicle here for even small things like inspections and oil changes. Super fair, pretty quick and next to the subway so easy to get to work after you drop off your car.

I was able to take my car to Steve, right before I went to work in the city. He diagnosed a lot of issues with my brakes that other mechanics had actually missed. All in all, he gave me very affordable prices from the labor to all of the parts that were needed. He provided EXCELLENT and TIMELY services; he and his team will be my mechanics from here on out.

I ve had my Subaru Baja worked on by several great NYC mechanics over the years, including a dealership. I now need a complete brake job. I didn t want to pay the dealer price, so I had my ScoobyTruck towed to Northern Brake and Transmission solely based on these Yelp reviews. After discussing the job with Steve, I have complete confidence I made the right decision. Steve showed me everything I needed to see under the car and described very clearly and with detail what the job would entail. I really appreciate the time other Yelpers spent to review this shop b/c it has saved me lots of time and worry. I ll update this review and add the 5th star once I have the car back later this week.
Omg these guys are awesome I mean I branch my Ford Focus 2012 old school car with issues gears stuttering shaking noises (burned transmission fluid was the one of the issues)...just 2 days later and my car feels brand new I mean I m relearning the feel drive to my car again that s amazing!!!just amazing this car means a lot to me. Simply stated, the best! Steve was outstanding to work with. Car wouldnt move out of park. Thought I had a major transmission issue. Steve and his crew took the vehicle in, ran diags on the entire system, figured out that my issue was actually a problem with the battery and a lack of power distribution. They put in a real battery (not the junk I fell for and bought at Pep Boys), ran a few new wires and grounds and my car has never run better. No joke, has NEVER run better. Steve took me through a few pointers on what to do if for some reason my car wont move out of park. They did it for next to nothing as far as cost is concerned. Thank you, Steve!!!!!! You guys are the best auto shop that I have ever dealt with.

Update: Its not the place but the mechanics they hire. New review based on additional work performed. The mechanic must have snagged a hose while working on the car. Steve at the counter said theres a transmission leak and would need the car overnight and remove the bumper to fix a transmission cooler leak. By the evening there was a puddle of fluid under my car.?? This was not present in the morning when I drove the car into the shop for a coolant/hose change. The next day, after personal review of the leak, i find the hose pulled and clamp moved which caused the transmission fluid leak at the transmission cooler. Steve should have reviewed this mechanics work prior to telling me he needs the car overnight. Also, I supplied dealer hoses and clamps for replacement with a radiator flush. I find the factory clamps I purchased were not all used. The transmission fluid leak that was non-existing prior to this visit only cost hours of my time and some fluid to fix. Steve should have reviewed this prior to telling me he found fluid leaking and explaining hell need the car overnight. I also was not happy with the bill being $100 over from quoted price. Original review and original work is still okay. Work was done on time and within quoted budget. I am familiar with auto repairs and very impressed with the good ethics and workmanship. I would highly recommend this place. I delt with Steve at the front counter and the mechanic who worked on my car. As needed, I will return. Thank you Northern Brake & Transmission Center. Their hours make it convenient to drop off and pick-up if working in the city.

The most unfortunate, overly costly car repairs are over! After experiencing several mechanics that overcharged and underperformed for their services, I had the absolute pleasure of taking my 2002 Toyota Celica GT there and was blown away by the customer care and service. I highly recommend Great Diagnostic Center for all your repairs you may need for your car. Theyve got my loyalty.
Went to a few transmission shops in the area and Steve was the only one who said that he wanted to check it out before directing a rebuild like the rest. He checked out the transmission and recommended we try a different strategy. It worked and the car is working like a champion. Steve is an honest and thoughtful mechanic and diagnostician. I usually don t write reviews but because of my great experience with this place I decided to do so. I am not from NYC however I did travel there recently to attend a funeral. As I was driving from GA heading to NYC my car started making a horrible noise. I had no idea what was wrong with my car but I prayed about it and continued to drive. I had no choice in the matter. A few weeks prior to driving to NYC I had my car serviced (oil change) at Pep Boys. Pep Boys messed up car really bad. And they even told me the guy that was working on my car was new. Now I have a BMW X6 but I felt it was safe to take my car to Pep Boys for the oil change because my sister takes her Mercedes there and my best takes his BMW X5 there. However I think because the guy was new at Pep Boys he didn t know what he was doing. Anyway, before getting back on the road I knew I had to have my car looked at. BMW said they couldn t check it out until the 7th and that was too long because I needed to get back to GA. Now I remember the last time I had break issues when I visited NYC some time back. I went to Northern Break and Tire and they did a good job at fixing my break issue. I decided to bring my car back to this same place to have the noise checked. First of all the guy is very friendly. He explained what he will check and do and gave me a rough estimate on how much repairs would cost. He gave me best case scenario and worse case scenario. Now this man could have easily given me worse case scenario but he didn t. He was fair, honest and he did everything in his power to save me money. When I picked my car up he even showed me the bad part and explained what went wrong. He even told me about future repairs and how to avoid them. My BMW dealer don t even take the time to explain what they did to my car. My car is back on the road. I drove 800 plus miles back home and my car is driving great. I would give this place 100 stars if possible. Thank you Northern Break and Tire for a job well done!

Steve services our fleet of vehicles and always does great work. Unlike dropping your car off at a dealer, where you have to make an appointment, wait in line to talk to a service advisor and then figure out how and when youre going to get your car back, Steve takes your car right away, asks a couple of quick questions and gets the work done. Pick it up again on your way home from work. Very convenient and close to the Subway.

A few years back I took our van into Northern after having it looked at by a few different places, none of which gave a definitive explanation of what might be the problem and responses ranged from Not interested in working on it to quotes in the $2-3K range. Steve at Northern took one look at it, diagnosed the problem, explained it adequately, and did the fix for less than $500. Ive been going ever since and always feel that Steve and his team do quality work.

If you are looking for an auto mechanic you can rely on to be honest, fair, and reliable then you have just found one. Steve has kept my car running for years now and just today gave it back to me in mint condition, ready for yet another 6 months criss crossing the country for work. He has never done more work than necessary, yet never lets anything that need to be fixed go unattended, always calling me first to let me know what he has discovered. He has gone out of his way to find and install quality parts at the best price possible and has a level of quality that keeps him from using substandard parts or doing half jobs that might put me in danger of breaking down. He treats my car as if HE was going to be driving it. I cannot stress this enough: He is the most trustworthy, reliable, and damn nice auto mechanic in this city: the kind that you didnt think existed anymore except in black and white movies and Mayberry.
